Boss is a medieval town-building game that gives social dynamics its own twist, turning citizen happiness into “a full-fledged game system,” launched in August of this year. Since then it has received a bunch of patches, fixes, and other stuff like a Halloween themed add-on. Now there is a new update that incorporates a bunch of community requested features.

“This update is almost entirely about ‘quality of life’ improvements, and most of its content is based on your comments and suggestions,” says developer Overseer Games in a Steam blog post revealing the changes with the update 1.050.0. The biggest addition to the list is the ability to manually place your starting town hall – the central center of power and governance in your colony – wherever you want on the map. “This should increase replayability and allow you to get more variety when building your city,” the studio explains.

Elsewhere, developers have made some tweaks to house maintenance and resource management. For example, now you will find that houses deteriorate over time (around 40 years of playtime), which means you will need to refurbish them to keep them in ship condition.

There are also some handy new pointers aimed at ‘ease of play’, such as new tips and notifications, as well as a bunch of visual tweaks to make it even more immersive. One of those chances adds visuals to indicate smoldering ruins left as a result of fires.

Here is the full list of changes from Overseer to To smoke:

  • Manual placement of town hall anywhere on any map, at the very beginning
  • Beautification hedges are now placed by stretching them, not by clicking on each segment individually
  • Added visuals for smoldering ruins following catastrophic fires
  • Houses now deteriorate over time (around 40 years of play) and need to be renovated
  • Added notification when a resource is not delivered due to a worker shortage
  • Added more useful clues to icons above citizens and buildings
  • People who rest in houses will emerge faster once [a] work appears nearby
  • The bug with stacking luxury resources in some houses is now fixed
  • Addition of new vegetation on several maps
  • Terrain improvements on multiple maps
  • Other optimizations concerning the path search
  • Additional Worker AI Improvements

If you want to try the game out, you can try it out for free, with a downloadable demo available at To smoke. The full game is currently priced at £ 15.49 / $ 19.99.
