Elden Ring Director Hidetaka Miyazaki Reveals His Favorite Souls Genre Boss


Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki and several PlayStation Studios developers have revealed their personal favorite bosses from the Dark Souls series, Demon’s Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

While Miyazaki previously shared that the Demon’s Souls boss Old Monk was his favorite, he explained a bit more about why he made this choice with PlayStation.Blog.

“If we’re talking about a boss that I’m ‘most proud of’ (to use those specific words), it would probably be the old monk from Demon’s Souls,” Miyazaki said. “The reason for that was that there was a lot of pushback against that design and what we were trying to do with it. But it was something that I really, really wanted to do. I wanted to bring that boss concept into the game , both from a visual design perspective and from a gameplay perspective, including the multiplayer element.

“Both from the implementation and the fun factor, we had a lot of pushback, and nobody believed it at the time. But in the end, we were successful, and I think it turned into into an intriguing boss that fans enjoyed. With Demon’s Souls, there were a lot of mechanics throughout development that were difficult to design. For example, the asynchronous online features were complicated, but I think the Old Monk encompasses those tribulations and how we went through and did something we were proud of.”

Insomniac Games associate community manager Thomas Hart also picked the old monk, saying the revelation that he wasn’t just fighting an AI, but a real gamer, was a “breathtaking” moment.
