Glassing demonstrates the “absolute virtue” of gender nonconformity (Early Track Stream)

A vertical slice is video game development lingo for a level that showcases the full set of a game’s mechanics, components, and gadgets. The Austin-based Glazing wrote their own perfect vertical installment with “Absolute Virtue”, the last track from their upcoming third album Twin Dream. The song is a bronco trying to push you away as it wreaks havoc on multiple genres throughout its supple four-minute runtime. Glassing’s black metal, noise rock, doom and post-rock are emulsified by their apocalyptic worldview. Get ready for the headtrip with our premiere below.

While the aforementioned genera may be the daytime styles, and the cross-pollination of genera is nothing new, Glassing finds the commonalities between each in a streamlined pursuit. They don’t innovate as long as they investigate. None of the genres they derive from are inherently optimistic, but they each express their solemnity differently. For example, the loneliness of post-rock is a far cry from the rejection of humanity by black metal. To tie those loose threads into a quilted slipknot, Glassing is stepping up the business, tying “Absolute Virtue” together with explosive vigor.

That’s all to say that Glassing’s wide palette is smarter than just gluing the ends of each component together. They load up the tone of noise rock and math rock rhythm to recalibrate black metal, turning it from haunting ground to scandal. Their keys scream as if the group is struggling to contain it with an otherworldly force. Later, Glassing contorts mud-laden riffs until the beat doubles on its own. The ensuing reverberation eventually gives way to a spacious coda, ending “Absolute Virtue” in a different solar system than the one in which it began.

The group comments:

This track is about the slow combustion of humanity to extinction. The question of where do we find the will to persist when things only get worse? The title “Absolute Virtue” describes this very crucial hidden ardor that guides our self-preservation.
