A section of Ghana’s music industry is calling for award programs to include the Amapiano music genre in award categories as it is now popular among some Ghanaian musicians.

Amapiano is a style of house music that emerged in South Africa in 2012.

It is a hybrid of deep house, jazz and lounge music characterized by synths, airy layers and broad percussive basslines.

A roster and mainstream musicians like Stonebwoy, D Black, Adina and Larusso all experimented with the Amapiano style of music and gave them some hit songs in 2021.

As it has become very popular among Ghanaian musicians and Ghanaian music lovers lately, there has been some debate on whether to immortalize it by including it in our music award categories.

Renowned entertainment expert Boga Ali Hashim, speaking on the award-winning OC Showbiz on Skyy Power 93.5FM on Saturday, October 2, said it would be a bad idea to incorporate the Amapiano musical genre into the program. Ghana musical awards.

He made it known that Ghanaians should instead focus on building their original musical genres such as Highlife and Hiplife and selling them to the world rather than accepting anything foreign that would give them no credit.

He said: “It is a bad decision to accept the Amapiano genre into our rewards system, it is not a global genre but just a South African type of music and if we continue to do such movements, our music will not grow. “

“We have our own genre that we do as well, the highlife and the hiplife, why not protect it and project it to the world so that they know that this is the music that Ghanaians make rather than projecting that of others.

“We have to protect what we have and cherish it, in the same way the Ghanaians denigrated the Kumawood films and killed the industry. If we continue like this, we will have nothing to project for the world as a product. Ghanaian original, ”he added.
